The RIGHT Floor: Entertainment, Living, and Family Rooms

Share
Every home has one. It’s the room…

• Where the family gathers for a movie or game night
• Where small gatherings or parties often center around (besides the kitchen, of course)
• Where the kids invariably end up playing video games
• Where football is playing throughout the season (and sometimes during the off-season)

The question is, or at least the question I’m talking about today is, ‘which floor works best for the demands and wishes of YOUR family, entertainment, or living room?’

Carpet is one of the more popular choices because of its comfort.

Warmth – carpet has high insulative properties and can be installed with radiant heating for added warmth and more efficient heating.
Design options galore – Construction types, fibers, colors, patterns…with all the options the choices are limitless
Green note: Besides the insulative properties, recycled carpet fiber is often considered a better alternative because of the increased durability and softness. Also, there are natural fiber choices such as the only fiber that has proven its excellence for centuries: wool.

Hardwood is a classic, always has been and always will.

Long lasting – hardwood floors are one of the few flooring choices that can last you for a lifetime or more and their appearance improves with age with character and added richness to the color
Value – hardwood floors are one of the few flooring choices that add value to your home
Simple to take care of – usually all you need is a dry terry cloth mop to grab any dirt and dust that has gathered
Green note: In addition to wood being a ‘life-floor’, wood is a natural product. There are many manufacturers who harvest their trees sustainably and there is reclaimed wood (one of my favorite looks because you get a new, quality floor that already has a natural character of its own). –Don’t forget to take a look at Hardwood’s cousins: bamboo and cork!–

Ceramic Tile and Natural Stone are classic choices with probably the highest capacity for customization of all flooring choices.

Customization – create the look of your dreams that just spills over with your personality and the wished personality of the room with tile
Long lasting – tile is another floor that can last a lifetime
Flexibility – tile can adjust with changes in a rooms features like rugs, furniture, and color pallet and add a new depth of character to the style of a room as it grows with you and your family
Bang for your Buck – like hardwood, tile is an incredible way to increase the value of your home
Green Note: Tile is long lasting as well as having the benefit of helping to preserve healthy air quality standards

Flex Floor Vinyl and Luxury Vinyl Tile are great choices for more active family rooms because of their resiliency.

Durability – Flex floor vinyl, or fiberglass-backed vinyl, is great for areas that see a high amount of traffic and activity. Perfect for rooms that need a ‘no-worries’ floor.
Designability – with choices in both tile and wood looks, there are thousands of design possibilities that are surprisingly realistic in appearance
A Viable Alternative – Want the look of wood or tile but also have a budget to keep in mind? This is a good substitute.

Laminate has many benefits similar to vinyl flooring choices as well as its own benefits of note.

Price – With today’s technology, you are able to get the look of exotic hardwood or rich tile for a fraction on the price
Easy Maintenance – Most days, all that’s needed is a quick sweep with a terry-cloth dust mop
Realistic – With today’s laminate the individual boards and tiles help add to increase the realistic appearance with beveled edges and depth
Green Note: many laminate floors are recycled and sustainably manufactured

Choosing the RIGHT Bathroom Floor

Share
The bath is one of the most used rooms in a home, next to the kitchen of course. Not only is it where you clean up and prep for the day, it can be a playpen for the kids.

And who doesn’t love to pamper themselves in their ‘home spa’?

So, when remodeling your bathroom it is important to choose a floor that will best fit how you will use the room.
• Will it stand up to rambunctious kids and the large pools of water from their splashing?
• Will steam cause it to swell or become slippery?
• How will it affect the feel of the room?
• Will it be easy to clean up in case of spilled shampoo, toothpaste, or shaving cream?
• Will it coordinate well with the backsplash, walls, & other design aspects?

Tile is one of the most popular flooring choices in bathrooms…and for good reason!
• Extremely durable
• One of the few floors not affected by water
• Countless design choices
• Can also be used for custom baths, showers, backsplashes, and countertops
• Bonus: it’s a great floor to use radiant heating with for eco-friendly and soothing warmth

Vinyl, either Flex Floor Vinyl or Luxury Vinyl Tile, is another great choice for bathrooms.
• Soft and warm underfoot
• Hundreds of thousands of design choices: wood, tile, and more
• Water safe
• Can also be used with radiant heating

What are some of the questions you would ask when choosing a bathroom floor?  What room would you like to hear about next?

Your Kitchen, Your Life…Which Floor?

Share
Today, the kitchen is often the heart of the home. The breakfast table is the homework center. Parties inevitably end up with people socializing around the island. Cherished bits of quality family time normally occur within that warm center of the home.

Due to that, choosing the right kitchen floor for your lifestyle is crucial.

  ~ Will it be comfortable?

~ Will it stand up to things like dropped plates and spilled food?

~ How easy will it be to clean?

And a consideration often forgotten is…

What kind of feel do I want this room to have? Will this floor help create that feeling?

Below we have compared various viable options for kitchen floors using the above mentioned criteria.

Hardwood ~ Wood has a lot of style options from contemporary to rustic, light to dark, and with limitless color options. Hardwood floors will help create a warm, natural atmosphere in any area. Other considerations include:

~ Easy Maintenance: Regular sweeping with a dry, microfiber mop is usually all that you will need.

~ Durable: With proper care and maintenance, a hardwood floor will last a lifetime.

~ Renewable: In more ways than one; the life of a wood floor can be extended by having it sanded and refinished.

~ Valuable: Wood has a high return of investment when it comes to home value.

Ceramic Tile and Stone ~ Tile is extremely customizable and is one of the easiest flooring options with an easy “WOW” factor. Using tile can help add symmetry with the countertops and backsplashes. Depending on the color and style, it can help accentuate any decor.

~ Customizable: You can create your own design, unique from everyone else’s floors.

~ Easy Maintenance: Like hardwood, you usually only need a quick sweep.

~ Valuable: Tile is another great floor to increase the value of your home.

~ Great Durability: It is very difficult to scratch and chip a tile floor.
~ Water: While wood and laminate may be affected by liquid, tile is not.

Laminate ~ A good alternative to tile and wood for the budget minded home, laminate has thousands of design options and can accentuate any decor.

~ Durable: Depending on the quality level, it is difficult to chip and scratch laminate floors.

~ Easy Maintenance: All you’ll need is a microfiber cloth mop, our recommended cleaner for a deeper clean, and clean, white, dry rags for quick removal of spills.

Flex Floor Vinyl and Luxury Vinyl Tiles ~ Improvements in technology have given us wonderfully versatile and durable flooring option with numerous design options.

~ Customizable: With realistic images and hundreds of thousands of colors and patterns, you can create the look of your dreams.

~ Budget Friendly: Want the look of hardwood and tile while staying in budget.

~ Comfortable: Especially with flex floor vinyl, this flooring option is more forgiving underfoot and feels warmer.

~ Easy Maintenance: Practically no effort with regular cleaning.

What is your dream home project this year?

We Wish You a Clean Christmas: Quick Tips for Dealing with Holiday Messes

Share

With Holiday Cheer comes the Holiday messes, here are some quick tips on how to deal with the spills and stains.

Since precaution is 70% of the solution, be sure to place welcome mats at entrances to catch dirt and snow.

Another great precautionary step is to encourage guests to leaves boots and shoes at the door.

Wax:

Gently scrape away dry wax.  With wet wax, quickly wipe off with a clean, white rag.  To prevent spillages, place small platters or bowls beneath candles to catch any dripping.

Food and Drinks:

First of all, scoop away any excess before it is tracked elsewhere by unsuspecting guests.

If the spill is on hardwood or other hard surface flooring, wipe up as quickly as possible with a clean, white rag.

If on carpet or a rug, immediately blot the spill with a warm, damp, clean, white rag.  Do NOT rub as that can force the stain into the fibers. (If the stain has dried, dampen the area before blotting.)

Lay down some clean, dry, white paper towels weighed down by a few books or similar items; this can be left overnight.

Afterwards, vacuum it to revive the fibers.

If the stain persists, we recommend using the appropriate Capture stain treatment as their products are gentle on your carpet or rug and will not damage it further.

If the mess persists or you have other questions, contact us for recommendations.
